Heya, just wanna see if there is any interest in this - how many of you are photography fanatics as well?

I really enjoy nature photography - waterfalls, sunrises, insects, village scenes etc, and although not a pro level, I've got some nice shots over the years, like the one you see at the top of this forum. That was taken at Mount Kinabalu peak using a Konica Minolta Z2 (prosumer camera).

Let me go and dig from my hard disk when I have time - I'll post up some photos.

Aiyah, seems like there are not many photo enthusiasts here. Me neither. I am not too particular about photo quality. I love sunrises, sunset and waterfalls. I bought a Canon PowerShot A720 IS to replace my old camera but haven't got a chance to bring it outdoors yet.

Not really into DSLR / prosumer cameras. Lazy me prefer point and shoot 'idiot' cameras.

Haha, yeah, thought so. Actually recently I managed to borrow my bro's DSLR camera - and after bringing it out for a weekend cruise, I thought it was super bulky and heavy.

The Canon Powershot range of cameras are good enough for trekking! At least, can just keep in a waterproof container and chuck it in the bag.

I remember during my treks, I was always worrying about dropping my camera into the water. There was once which I was holding my camera and at Pelepah (Lumbong) waterfalls, and I actually slipped and fell... and luckily my camera was like 1 cm above the water~! *heng ah*

But after so many rounds of trekking and exposure to the moisture, my Konica is now officially dead. Can't focus well already. Hehee... but I still think the photos were well worth it!

I agree that DSLR may not be a good idea for trekking. A compact point and shoot camera will be a better choice. However, most compact digital cameras do not have a wide angle lens good enough for scenic landscape shot. Panasonic is probably one of the few brands that offer wide-angle zoom lens in their compact.

So I am looking at the DMC-LX3 for my next trekking trip.

I really like the lens... 24-60mm f/2.0-2.8 all-glass Leica DC Vario-Elmarit, perfect of scenic landscape, people and twilight shots.

Here's another review and more pictures of the Lumix DMC-LX3 by LetsGoDigital.

Anyone has hands-on experience or own this model... please comment on image quality, weather-proofing and so on.

Whoa - I didn't know that non SLR cameras can take photos like the dog with the depth of field. Sweet!

Going to do more research into that camera later.

Went to Cathay Photo and John 3:16 at Funan to check the price of Panasonic LX-3.

    Cathay quoted $725
    - free softcase
    - 4GB memory card

    John 3:16 Funan quote $700(cash)
    - free softcase
    - 4GB card or add $30 for a 8GB card

Very tempted to buy on the spot but too much economic uncertainties... better go make the money first.

    Shi!

I checked out the ClubSnap forums and found that LX3 seems to be quite a HOT camera in the Panasonic fourms at the moment!

Heh.. The 24mm wide angle is really really tempting.

Actually, I'm not a very technical photographer - but what is the difference between a Leica lenses and Carl Zeiss lenses and the rest? The Carl Zeiss lenses seem to be the primary reason why people buy Sony cameras.

But after going through all the different camera specifications, its really hard to find a camera that has the good features packed in a compact body. Haha... maybe I'm asking for too much!

Both Leica and Carl Zeiss lens are state-of-the-art. So, I think it's a matter of personal preference.

For the lens used in compact cameras, the difference is hard to tell because what we see also depend on the sensor and imaging algorithm. So it's more important to see the actual picture and decide if you like the result.

The main difference between the expensive and average lens lies in the F-stop. It's pretty rare to have a compact with F2.0 lens.

Goodness! The photos taken by the DMC-LX3 are so tempting.

I don't really know much about the technical things of photography but I love taking landscape photos. Don't have the heart to splurge on a DSLR at the moment though.

Do you guys think SimLim would offer a better deal by any chance?
