Hi Yazid,

Yea man, I checked their website as well among other Indonesian agencies.. I got a contact in Indonesia too with whom I did Mount Semeru last year October. Other option we have is going there ourselves and then hiring the guide and porter at the Kersik tuo village (starting point). IT's quite doable as well... slightly more inconvenient tho but more cost effective.

Since Tiger airways doesn't fly there anymore, our option is to go to Palembang and take land transport (longer distance) or to go padang via K.L. on airasia.

Will update you with the plan as it unfolds By Mid Feb, we should be all confirmed.

Cheers dude...

Hi Guys,

Glad to finally stumble upon this community. My name is Mahmud.

I'm very much into hiking and outdoor activities. Previously in schooldays, my trips were mostly to mountains and waterfalls in Malaysia. For the past 3 or 4 years or so I'm exploring the Region too.

I and couple of friends thinking of doing Mount Kerinci in Padang, Sumatra from 22nd March,2010 for about 1 week (incl. flight and sightseeing days).

Anyone interested is most welcome to join. Also does anyone have some info and contacts on their local trek agencies?

Cheers..

Hi guys,
I will be trekking with someone I met on the 'lonely planet' to do the Mt KK trek. Everything is booked, but I have a problem of going to the Mt KK Park after touching down at the airport.
I did a search and know that the transport cost around 20RM and start at 8:00am.

But my flight only reach there at 8:00pm in the evening. Can you guys advise if the bus is still available at that hour? Any other information will be very much appreciated.

By the way, Happy New Year!!

Hi Jwest: Agreed. Since this trek isn't easy, we need a fair amount of experience. I'm 27, climbed Tahan once, and have done some treks ie Kinabalu, Belumut, Anapurna twice. My friends have also climbed their fair share of mountains but not Tahan. Both of them are quite fit. Of course, Tahan takes the cake. That's why its important to get good travel buddies. I may have another friend who's climbed Tahan once coming along.

We will be getting a guide and renting equipment both thru a Singapore travel agency that I've gone trekking with before.

I know that there's still bound to be some uncertainty, especially with the numerous things that could go wrong with Tahan. That's part of the fun, isn't it? Rest assured that we're not daredevils and we won't be slip-shod in planning for contingencies.

Not very sure how to drop a PM but perhaps you could drop me a PM if you're still interested? Cheers!

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and just trying my luck. Would anyone be interested in trekking to Gunung Tahan on the above mentioned dates? I've got 2 other friends already and don't mind more kakis.

The plan is to take the traverse route (up via Merapoh and down to Kuala Tahan). Hence, the long duration of the trek. We will not be hiring porters so this trek is likely to be quite an ardous one.

Hi all,

I'm not a trekker myself, but my dad is 52 and has been dreaming about going on treks for a long time. He really loves nature and is very active, but has never been on a real trek before. I've heard that there are some amateur trekking clubs that he could get involved in, that would help him slowly scale up. I'm a little worried about him just going for a hard one right away. Would anyone be able to give me any recommendations? Any club that maybe my dad and I could join together?

Thanks so much!

Oops, I didn't bring my camera. Usually, I don't see the trip's photo. I always think that the only thing I want to capture is the moment things happen and because it always come so unexpectedly, the shot is over.
For example, when I was bumped by the donkey onto the short thorny scrub, when I finally fell into the freezing cold stream after frog-jumping for almost 2 mins, when I saw the shooting star, when I insisted to crawl down the ice mountain while the rest walked, when I lied dead on my bed with my walking stick and shoe, when I was so lucky to get spit by the old man in the city... those are the moments I wish to capture and I think only my 'RAM' can do the job...

By the way, I didn't go for any training. I guess anyone can do the trek and it's just a matter of slow or fast. But if I were to go for AC again, I will do some train up because if you reached the destination early, you got a warm solar shower. If you were late, you will get freezer icy shower. It is also better to cross the Thorung Pass early... I am like a dry charcoal now because I was burned by the reflection of sun on the snow. So, I will try again in a year or 2.

It is unfortunate to hear about your issue with regard to the independant guides - however, for people making a trip there, we sorta "have no choice" because these guides are the ones that take the effort to get connected with the rest of the world and get business.

Maybe they don't deserve THAT big slice of the pie, but who is to say that?

Just an update. I am just back from Nepal.
It is not very tough to pass Thorung Pass even during this season. It all depends on your determination. The average maximum hours of trekking is 6 hrs, except Thorung Pass which takes me 15 hours to complete. I believe if you did some training before going and also have a proper shoe, you can make it within 9hrs. Nepal is really beautiful and for the 20 days trekking, I never fail to wake up early to see sunrise... but on the other hand, the sight of poverty and donkey is something that I hope to erase from the beautiful picture...
By the way, just a note that if you ever browse the web looking for indepnedant guide, please be careful. Many website suggest to get independant guide instead of via agency, so that the guide or porter get whatever you paid and need not pay any commission fee to agency. This is not true. I pay an independant guide 15USD and later realise that the porterguide is just getting 700Nps which is less than 10USD. Part of his hard earn money has been ripped off by the person who simply write and draw me the itinenary... This is the ugly and evilish side of Nepal's poverty.

Dear KA,

Thank you very much for your post here. Its my pleasure to answer you here.

Well, Regarding the Annapurna Base Camp trek, Its much easier trek in Nepal. We start our trek from low altitude and we go up gradually. So, just physical fitness is fine. There are some trekkers who do this trek without having any previous trekking experience..

hey Jaeden

If you are going for a long trip, get a camera with AA batteries and bring lots and lot of spares. The last thing you want is to run out of batt at the peak!

If you really want to capture the magic moments, I would recommend buying a pouch for the camera and attaching that pouch to your backpack strap at chest level using karabinas (how do you spell that?!) or hook and loop fasteners.

That way, you can whip it out immediately when you are trekking, no need to put down the backpack etc. keeping it at chest level (as opposed to waist level) will save your camera just in case you slip over shallow river crossings.

In the pouch, keep 1 or 2 waterproof plastics (i use ziplock bags, but if you have the budget you can go for the solid waterproof bags). This is useful for waterproofing. In the case of rain, just take 5 seconds, and wrap the entire pouch with the plastic. In the case of going for a waist or higher deep level river crossing, take some time to pack it up and dump it in an accessible compartment in your backpack. Don't let your camera drink water ya?

If you need to take a picture WHILE crossing a river (don't ask me why I ever did that!?!), walk to the point, take out the camera, take the picture, put back safely, then continue walking. Common sense, but in eagerness I once slipped and fell in a crossing, flat on my buttocks (water at shoulder level)... camera in hand!

Fortunately I held it up above the water (barely 10 cms from the gushing water!) Hahaha...

Trekking photography is exciting stuff.

@shaqstudio

@nepalexpedition has a good list, but to add, I would say that the equipment to bring for a trek depends a lot of the nature of the trek.

Let me give an example - footwear.

Tropical rainforest treks are mostly muddy, river crossings, leeches, and stuff like that. On the other hand, because its "tropical", the temp shouldn't be a big issue (unless u are going high up).
So in this case, I personally recommend wearing regular outdoor adventure shoes (with a good grip), and be prepared to get it soaked wet! You can also bring along a pair of flip flops so you can dry your feet comfortably at the campsite.
