15 day trek to Garhwal Himalayas in July, anybody?
Great! After setting up this email list, I received an email last week about one of the members going for a 15 day trek to Garhwal Himalayas in July.
The trek crosses through high altitude regions with rivers, and passes, highest point being about 20,000 ft (about 6,000 meters). According to Ravi (our member), this trek is only suitable for people with experience trekking.
The trek is scheduled in the month of July, as this is the only month when these pass are accessible. The cost of the trek is about S$2000 apart from the air tickets.
Do drop a comment if you are interested, so I can connect you up with Ravi!

i’d have to give it a miss as i will be heading to 新疆 xinjiang, china for 21-days or so in august. anyone interested to visit xinjiang instead? i’ll be going there to check out the northern parts of the province, hoping to trek and see mountains, deserts, rivers, ruins, city and maybe the uighurs, mongols and other minorities there. the estimated cost for the trip is definitely no more than S$2,500 (inclusive of airfare).

spencer, i’ll be going to fraser’s hill from 25-29th jan 08. took leave and would not be convenient to apply more leave for 18th jan 08. unless you’re telling me you are leaving on the nite of 18th jan?
anyone interested to go fraser’s hill for trekking? there are a few relatively simple trails there. no camping is necessary. lotsa accomm there. but if u wanna pitch tent, no one can stop u, i think.

spencer, i booked a room at a place called the singapore house. i can get it at $30/room/night. the room allows for 2 persons.
we’re thinking of taking a sleeper-class train from johorbahru on the night of 24th jan. we” reach kuala lumpur in the morning of 25th jan. we’d also want to book and confirm our return coach bus back on 29th jan.
from kl, we’ll take a taxi to bring us up to frasers and bring us back down to kl. the bus service stopped again. :-p
when in frasers, we’d just be trekking (the 8 trails there) and exploring the place.

oh, no problems if a couple of frens join in. i checked the room and there are still 3 rooms available. let me know quickly if u want to join in so that i can help book the room. oh the taxi ride will not be more than rm180 one-way (we’ll make sure that it does not).

i’ve been to stong, and wouldn’t mind considering doing gunong stong and ayam together in one trip, another time. so cannot join u if u decide to go stong.
for your info, most of the trails in frasers r easy. but there’s at least one trail that is challenging. so, see what you and ue frens wants to get out of the trip:-)
the transport for sin-kl-sin would be about s$50. so 3 nights there is about $200. i’m also budget traveller :-p

Hi Bernard,
I went to Fraser Hill on Nov 2007.
Better bring your leech sock, if not, buy one. The leeches in Bishop trail is unbelievable. I consider it unwalkable without some sort of leech protection.
The most challenging trail is Pine Tree Trail. You would need about 8 hours for the two way trek. Don’t believe the trail guide/map from the tourist office which list the trek as 4km one way. It’s much longer than that, I assured you.
We stay at Silverpark resort which cost about RM180/night for 2 persons. But not worth it, it is quite poorly maintain.
Finally, may I know how you book Singapore House? Through internet? What’s the internet address?
Thanks.

hi ang, thanks for the warning abt bishop’s trail. leeches are not pleasant :-p. i’m fine with the long distance of pine tree trail. thanks again for the info on the unreliable trail map.
no wonder people get lost in frasers hill. the tourist office is to be blamed hehe.
i booked singapore house through http://www.aloharesorts.com.sg/
being a civil servant, i pay $30 (or $15 for weekdays) while members of public pay $75. the booking system insists that the person who booked the room must be present at the singapore house. so that means, i can book for you, but i must be there.

Hi Bernard,
Thanks. I’m working in Stat Board. Would I qualify for the reduced rate?
Btw, you seems quite an experience trekker. Have you been to Pelepah Waterfall? Interested to go (around March, after the Monsoon season)?

Hi Bernard, I just came back from Stong, monsoon season prevented us from taking the waterfall route which I was looking forward towards. But it was a great climb nonetheless. I hope you enjoy ur frasers hill climb
On a separate note, I will be organising a trip to berkelah falls end march. Interested?

hey spencer, i too just stepped into my house from fraser’s hill. glad u had a satisfying trek to stong! i enjoyed frasers. the pinetree trail was well troddened and the peak offers panaramic view - beautiful. i also discovered that there are 2 peaks along this trail. the first one is somewhat blocked by vegetation. the 2nd one is the more scenic peak. the 2nd peak is clear and if you don’t mind the dangers of camping on a clear peak, it can accommodate about two three-men tents. pine tree trail (5km one way) is doable by most people. took us around 7 hours two-ways. my friend who does not exercise could do it as well. so most of us should be able to:-). bishop’s trail was relatively simple and the leech problem wasn’t as bad. had seen much worse.
i have a feeling (but not absolutely certain) that i had done berkelah falls few years back. i think ang may be organising a trip to pelepah falls which i have not been. i’ll see how it all fits in or not. hehe.
