A New Camera for Trekking?
I was thinking about my trips this coming June - the beautiful scenery I’m going to see, especially the one at the summit of Mount Kinabalu… so excited! I am considering to buy a digital SLR camera because the current one I am using is a little spoilt.
However, a DSLR is going to cost a bomb - the one I am targeting, the Canon 350D (an entry level DSLR camera) will cost almost $1800, considering the accessories I need to buy to maintain the camera well. So I posted up a thread in ClubSnap forums asking whether the investment is worthwhile.
I’m HAPPY… that the people in the forum discouraged me from the investment! Haha… Come to think of it, it is true, it would be really really hard to maintain the camera in the wilderness, considering all the moisture, the hard knocks… and not to mention, the many occasions where I slipped and fell while I was holding my camera. Another point brought up was that it would be difficult, unless I really go with a group of photographers, because DSLRs are more cumbersome to operate, needing to change the lenses etc, the trekking guides may not be happy to wait for me!
So well, I shall stick to my camera and see what I can do with it! Good that I’m convinced.

Hey Kianann,
Taking nice pictures have very little to do with expensive camera. It is the eyes behind the camera that’s important. Even a disposable camera can turn up great shots. Unless, you make a living taking photograph and have to show off your camera to your clients, spending a couple of thousands dolllars on a DSLR and lenses is really neccessary.
How do I know?
I used to own 3 Nikon’s(F3, FA & FE) and 1 Canon EOS plus more than 10 lenses. Some of the lenses costed more than the camera body. And my best picture was captured by a $20 Kodak!
You have taken many nice nature shots so I guess you know what I mean.

Hehe… I think that’s true. I should spend more money going to read up books on good photo composition first, and only when I really need functions beyond my current camera, then I will buy.
