Reply from AfricaTravelResource.com regarding my Kilimanjaro Climb

I emailed AfricaTravelResource enquiring about how much the Kilimanjaro Trip will cost, and what I can do now to prepare for the trip.

There was a long reply, giving me a lot of details about each route! According to the email, the routes on the mountain fall into three groups: South-Eastern, South-Western, and North-Eastern.

The only South-Eastern route is the Marangu (Coca-Cola) route. Marangu is the easiest route, but its packed because of that.

South-Western routes include Machame (5 nights), Shira (7 nights) and Lemosho (6 nights). Shira is the one I want to go! It is supposed to be tough but wonderfully scenic trek!

The only North-Eastern route Rongai, which is usually a five night climb. According to the guide, this route not as scenic as the South-Western routes, but is generally considered to be slightly easier.

The guide recommended Rongai route, because it is the one with the least traffic!

How? Am I confident of my fitness? The five nights climb costs about US$1500, and seven nights about US$2000. Whoa! Start saving now!

Anyway, Africa Travel Resource is a listed company in London… I think! The signature was “Africa Travel Resource Ltd”. Great! Hmm… but still, I think I should find out about more operators first!

We planned our trip using these guys and have to say they were exceptional. Recommend the 7 day trip if you can, gives you a bit more time to acclimatise. I’ve uploaded pics to my flickr account and will shortly be writing detailed entries on the trip.

Is that a photo of a termite’s nest? Sorry, correct me if I’m wrong!

You look like you’re building up to something really big, so I’m staying tuned!

No lar… just a twirly wirly plant, and I forgot what its name is already. But I remember something that the guide said - that all these plants twirl the same direction, and the direction is opposite in the northen hemisphere and the southern hemisphere!

Really? That is so cool! I wonder how they knew that, did they really go and compare all of them? Haha!

Anyway, this phenomenon might help explain why the plants do this:

“The Coriolis Effect is the observed curved path of moving objects relative to the surface of the Earth.

Hurricanes are good examples. They curve to the right in the northern hemisphere and to the left in the southern hemisphere. What makes the hurricanes move in this way is the Coriolis force.

What happens at the equator? The Coriolis force is too weak to operate on the moving air at the equator. This means that weather phenomena such as hurricanes are not observed at the equator, although they have been observed at 5 degrees above the equator. In fact, the Coriolis force pulls hurricanes away from the equator.”

That means we will never see hurricanes in Singapore, since we are just 1 degree away from the equator. Yay! :D

We’ve been looking into climbing kilimanjaro as well…. the two companies we’re looking at are zara (http://www.zaratravel.com/) and pacwest (http://www.pacwest.com.sg/), the latter mostly because they’re based in singapore and handle flights and transport and such. good luck! this is damn expensive.

just wanted to say we wound up travelling with the cheapest option we found: Good Earth tours (http://www.goodearthtours.com; USD$1130 for a 6day trek including shuttle from nairobi and 4 nights in a hotel in Arusha) and Qatar Airways (SGD$1556 round trip from singapore to nairobi via doha). We highly recommend Good Earth…. Qatar was decent for the price but you MUST confirm your return flight somehow — we couldn’t get through to the nairobi office and had to fly standby on the way home. All in all a wonderful trip though! Good luck!!
