Why go trekking and climb mountains?

Seriously, if you ask me… When I was introduced to trekking by my university’s adventure club, I was in for a rude shock when they brought me to trek the slippery Lombong waterfalls! I was caught totally off guard! I fell like crazy, ending the short two day trek with bruises, cuts and grazes all over, and the sand flies at the campsite didn’t help much.

I didn’t really like the feeling of trekking! But I continued and signed up to be one of the executive committee members of the adventure club, and subsequently made more trips like Berkelah Waterfalls, Mount Ophir, Gunung Stong and Taman Negara.

Why is that so? I can’t explain it also. Maybe its because of the sense of achievement, that feeling when you reach the top of Ophir, gazing over the plantations and little houses below. Maybe its the scenery… that awesome breathtaking sunrise at the base camp of Stong. Maybe its the community, that bunch of crazy people I really love hanging around with. Maybe its nature, all the greeneries and all the insects, flora and fauna.

I don’t know. Really. Sometimes it really feels terrible to be standing at the top of the mountain, knowing that the trek down is going to be long and tiring, but when you are back down, you will say to yourself - “I want to come back here again… and I want to conquer greater mountains!”

I love trekking!

Hi Kian Ann, thanks for your comments. I like this blog better and I can tell you’re really excited about trekking. Maybe you can be the next Khoo Swee Chiow? Singapore already has an “explorer”; it still needs a “trekker”. You can try for a record or something related to this.

I tend to think trekking might be a fad, because I grew out of it. Or maybe I’m too lazy to go trekking these days. Must be working life. :(

I see that you have your own company - that’s very cool. It must be good to be your own boss because that will free up a lot of time for you to pursue your hobbies. I think most people here would like to engage in more activities and pastimes, but they just don’t have the time or energy, especially once they start working. So in the end we just end up rotting in front of our computers/TV everyday. ;)

If I ever end up jobless, I’ll consider going trekking again. Though I think whoever goes with me will have to carry all my stuff!! ;D
