The Mount Kinabalu Trip this June!

The Sabah Trip planned for late June this year is more or less confirmed! I’m so excited about it! At the moment, there will be a total of seven people going for the trip! The trip itinerary follows the one I have posted a couple of days ago - spending a total of 10 days there!

I was informed that the whole trip will cost approximately S$800 - S$900. This is actually quite cheap considering the rich itinerary - which includes climbing the Mount Kinabalu, white water rafting, a visit to Poring Hot Springs, Manukan Island and a Open Water Dive Course (SSI Certificate). I’m really so excited about the trip!

Okay. Some pointers with regard to planning a Mount Kinabalu trip. Planning must be really early, because for Sabah, Singaporeans will have to take a flight over, unlike the other treks in Peninsular Malaysia, were you can choose to get a coach or train. Therefore, critically, plan early! We started planning for the trip 6 months ahead. Well, its kind of difficult to get people to confirm their availability 6 months ahead, I know, but that’s the way it is.

We are traveling using Air Asia, a budget airline, since the trip is just over 2 hours. So make sure you get a good ticket price! I wish I could unravel the workings of the ticket prices, but I have no idea how it works at the moment! The last time Ivy checked the price, it was RM90 for one way. Today, I checked and its RM150! Gosh! Better book quick! That already means another RM60 for each person!

The other reason why there is a need to book early is because of the accommodation vacancies at Laban Rata (the rest house halfway up the mountain). Our contact was able to reserve for us eight vacancies until today, and unfortunately, we could only fill seven. Well, seven is good anyway! At least we have a place to stay for the night! I remember last year when we were in the Rovers executive committee, I had to forgo my trip because there were not enough vacancies in Laban Rata! So sad!

Anyway, so happy that I’m finally going to Mount Kinabalu… and getting my diving certificate!

Hey Fennel! I will check with my friend if I can slot one more person in. However, no guarantees cos the guide kinda reserved the places for us, and when we told her that we have only 7 people (she originally reserved 8 ), she had returned the last place back… Will correspond via email ya. ;)

Hi…I am planning to climb mount kinabalu with some friends this coming may, and am trying to find out more about the weather/climbing conditions in May. we are really wary of slippery trails due to bad experience …
am further confused cos I’ve checked out a number of websites, and it seems to rain quite a bit in May although it’s supposedly the ‘dry season’?
Would be grateful for some advice/shared experience to clear up this mind-boggling issue!
    thanks : )

I’ve not climbed Kinabalu before (planning to climb in June this year), so I can’t advice much.

However, its true that May/June is the drier seasons, and from what I know, Kinabalu is more like the “Ophir” type of mountain, rather than slippery treks like Berkelah waterfalls… but then again, in tropical countries like Malaysia, we really don’t know when it will rain, so bring raingear!

And I think the issue of slippery treks can be much lessened using good footwear!

    Hope that helps!

Hey there, could you kindly email me please? I want to plan a similar trip (including the diving certification etc. in June) to Mount Kinabalu but have no idea where to start. I would greatly appreciate it if you could offer some advice/contacts to begin with. Also, how long will your trip last for? How long is just the climb and descent expected to take (including travel to and from Singapore)?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi hi,
I’m planning to climb KK and would really appreciate all help and advice on where to start. Is it better to go through a tour operator/agency or DIY? And if a tour operator’s better, any recommendations? Thanks in advance.
